What To Expect From Therapy

  • What is Therapy?

Therapy is a collaborative process between you and your therapist. This means you can let the therapist know what you find helpful or unhelpful and share your own ideas on what will aid progress. Therapy is not necessarily a “quick fix” and it can take time and work to notice any changes. The therapist cannot guarantee that sessions will result in improvement, but will do their best to provide effective treatment and help you achieve your goals. Your progress can be regularly reviewed and the therapist will only recommend further sessions if these are likely to be of benefit to you. You are under no obligation to continue sessions.

  • Your First Appointment

The initial assessment session is an invitation to talk through any questions you may have about therapy and what type of support you would like to receive from your therapist. There is opportunity for us to talk about what has brought you to therapy, what may be causing the difficulties you are experiencing, and what you would hope to be different from having therapy. The initial assessment session can typically be between one to two sessions. If you decide that therapy is not for you or a different approach is needed that cannot be provided by us, then we will do our best to put you in touch with someone who may be able to help.

  • Duration and Frequency Of Sessions

If you decide to continue with therapy sessions, you and your therapist will collaboratively agree on the frequency of the sessions (these are usually held once a week or once a fortnight) and typically the sessions will last 50 minutes.

Please contact us as soon as possible to let us know if you would like to cancel or rearrange an appointment. We operate under a cancellation policy where 48 hours notice by phone or email is required for a cancellation or for a request to rearrange an appointment. Please refer to FAQ for further details.
